We’re delighted to be part of Sporting Memories; an age-friendly and dementia-friendly session that provides a welcoming space for those aged 50+. It helps older people to reminisce, replay and reconnect through the power of sport and physical activity.
It is a forum to chat and reminisce about sport as well as a chance to participate in ‘Love to Move, a chair-based gymnastics exercise programme, developed by the British Gymnastics Foundation.
It’s also an opportunity to be part of a regular activity away from home, improving overall wellbeing.
Within our Sporting memories sessions, we will include Love to Move activities. They are specially designed to get older people moving and functioning better. The programme achieves this by carefully integrating the use of gymnastic foundation skills, cognitive stimulation therapy and social interaction activities.
Almost every part of Love to Move is based on bilaterally asymmetrical movement patterns. This is understood to benefit older people and those with dementia and mild cognitive impairment, by enabling the left side and right side of the brain to process information independently.
This in turn supports improving cognitive function, coordination and the ability to carry out activities of daily living more independently.
