General Gymnastics

About

Join our fun weekly General Gymnastics classes for those in Primary School Reception to Year 6.

Our friendly and experienced coaches support children to reach the best of their ability, with classes catering to mixed abilities and organised by year groups.

As well as supporting physical and social development, our classes focus on different activities each term, including tumbling, floor and vault, and acrobatics. We also offer optional competitions for those in Year 3+.
1. To sign up for a class

Please register for an account with us and complete the online forms in full, including contact and medical details where needed.

Please select three class preferences based on day, time and location (the options available to you are based on age and school year).

Without your class preferences, we are not able to offer you a space, so please make sure this part is completed!

Once you have chosen your class preference, the office will then be notified and email you to confirm there is space in your preferred class, or discuss other options available with you.

2. Securing your class space and payment

Once you are happy with your agreed class, the office team will load the invoice onto your RGA account where you can make a secure payment.

Please note payment is required immediately, or by the deadline stated, to secure your class space.

Optional member exclusives

Each year we hold three competitions for our recreational members in Year 3 and upwards.

Our optional and friendly club competitions are designed to not only motivate and inspire our gymnasts but to prepare them for future friendly competitions internally within RGA and externally at school events.

Our competitions each have a different core focus that will be covered in their weekly class with us. We also offer Competition Preparation sessions, usually during half term.

Core focus areas:

  • Tumbling

  • Floor & Vault

  • Acrobatics

We stage a Summer Festival every few years, usually in the Summer term. A great way to see what other gymnastics we offer, from disability and inclusion to squad gymnasts who have represented Great Britain in Acrobatics. It’s also an opportunity to connect with likeminded parents, enjoy the fun and refreshments outside and gymnastics displays inside.

On top of that, we offer member discounts and priority booking for holiday activities.

General Gymnastics Awards

Richmond Attainment Awards

The recently launched Richmond Attainment Awards (RAA) provides gymnasts with the opportunity to develop skills across five* Olympic apparatus: floor, vault, bars, beam and trampoline. The RAA also covers Acrobatics and Tumbling elements too.

These progressive Olympic-inspired awards inspire gymnasts to achieve challenging yet realistic goals and allow gymnasts to experience the full range of gymnastics apparatus with structured skills development.

They are designed to progress age-appropriate skills that are challenging yet achievable. The varied apparatus and skills not only encourage physical development across the whole spectrum (strength, stamina, flexibility) but also fosters creative thinking and develops their teamwork, leadership and communication skills.

Richmond Award Scheme

Our well-established Richmond Award Scheme (RAS) focusses on skills development to the point of being able to combine and link various skills that positively challenge both mind and body. From gymnastics elements and tumbling skills, to choreography and linking skills; the RAS offers each gymnast the opportunity to perform a “routine”, or set of linked skills to complete the badge. This paves the way for entry into our friendly club competitions (Year 3+ only) performing routines and linked skills in front of an audience.

The RAS also supports building confidence through developing teamwork, leadership and coaching skills, especially for those in Year 7+.

Targets

During Targets term, gymnasts focus on specific skills to achieve, including preparation steps and moves that support learning. These skills and preparation steps also help develop physical strength, ability and understanding, enabling further progression.

More

Watching week

As well as being able to view our gymnasiums in our Cafe area, we also offer Watching Week towards the end of each term. This is an opportunity for you to observe our class in the gym and see all the skills your gymnast has been working on during the term! Keep an eye on your emails for details of your Watching session.

Other

Due to the nature of our training centre and the logistics involved, we are unable to offer a trial class for our recreational classes. We recommend booking one of our daily holiday camps as a great way to try out gymnastics and getting a feel for RGA before committing to classes.

GymTeam (11+ years)

Our Gym Team programme (Year 7+) encourages independent learning, skills progression and development, as well as support to enter the sport as a helper, coach or judge for those that want to further expand their gymnastics pathway. With all levels welcome, our existing Gym Team members include both beginners and those that have been with us previously. We are proud of the number of teenagers we are able to retain in sport generally and gymnastics specifically.
